5th Grade Newsletter for September 30-October 4


Things to Remember:
·         Student Council members will meet Tuesday morning at 8:00 in Ms. Reese’s room.
·         Help Sessions: Each 5th grade teacher is offering extra support before or after school each week. Please contact your child’s teacher if you are unaware of when these sessions are occurring.
·         Spirit Wear orders are due this Wednesday, October 2.
·         The science extra credit project and report must be turned in by October 18 to receive credit.
Vocabulary: This week’s words come have the root tele meaning “far away” and astr meaning “star; outer space.” The test on Friday will cover definitions and parts of speech.

Reading: Your child is starting a NEW fictional chapter book today! It MUST be read by Friday, October 11. Students will have 15-30 minutes every day to read in class. They should also read at least 20 minutes each night at home. This book MUST be brought to school each day as in-class assignments will be given in the Reader’s Response Notebook based on the reading. MENU #4 is also DUE FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11.
Writing:  We are finishing up our unit on informative essay/article writing. Ask your child about his/her piece that we wrote in class on how history has affected our nation. They are also writing an independent piece this week on how weather affects our lives. Our focus is the organization of 5 paragraphs with supporting details and textual evidence.
Science: A weekly review packet will be sent home each Monday. This is DUE ON FRIDAY. This week we will focus on forces of motion (pages 121-124 and 101-104). In class, we will continue FOSS Kit called “Mixtures and Solutions.” This week we will focus on saturation and concentration of solutions.

Social Studies: We are studying the U.S. government, including the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Tests will be open notes/book and if students are listening and participating in class notes and discussion they should do very well.

5th Grade Newsletter for September 23-27




Dear Families,
This is just a reminder that Girls’ Reading Night is on Thursday, September 26. Doors open at 5:45 and it will go through 7:30 p.m. Please RSVP for this event by calling 720.886.4049. We hope to see you there!
Our first field trip is right around the corner! In conjunction with our social studies unit on government, we will be visiting the Capitol in Denver on October 8. Please read and return the permission slip being sent home today.
The science extra credit project is going home today. Crystals and reports must be turned in by October 18 to receive credit.  Have a great week! J

Newsletter for September 16-20

We hope everyone is doing well after an eventful 3-day weekend and that you have not suffered from too much rain damage. We have our fingers crossed for sunshine this week! Remember, this is a shortened week due to an inservice day for teachers on Friday. We hope to see our boys at Reading Night this Thursday evening. Please read the following reminders and let us know if you have any questions. Thanks so much!

 

·         MAP Testing begins this week. We will be setting goals and working towards achieving them.

·         Island Projects are due this Thursday.

·         A science homework packet on ‘thermal energy’ will go home today and be due on Thursday.

·         There will be no new spelling or vocabulary this week.

·         Today students should have chosen a new chapter book to read for the next two weeks and complete the reading menu #3. The book and menu items (all 9) are due Friday, September 27.

·         In science we will continue our study of mixtures and solutions by observing the properties of crystals. Look for an extra credit assignment this week that will be due October 18. Students may bring in his/her project earlier if they prefer.

·         In social studies we will finish georaphy and begin our study of government.

This is just a reminder that Boy’s Reading Night is on Thursday, September 19 and Girl’s Reading Night is on Thursday, September 26. It will be a “Mystery-filled” evening. Have you sold any items for our PTCO Fundraiser? We hope so! All orders and checks are due this Thursday. We appreciate our BTE families supporting this important cause and enabling field trips for our students.
Finally, if you have not joined the 5th Gear Kids Program, it is not too late! Students who are signed up for the program will receive extra PE time once a month with Mr. Gaede.

Students will be writing an informative article in class about his/her island. While some class time will be given to work on the project, students are encouraged to continue working on this at home.
