5th Grade Homework Newsletter for November 26-30

Special Friends Day was a huge success last week. Thank you to everyone who participated in this fun event. We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. Remember, this is the LAST week of the PENNY HARVEST, so don’t forget to donate if you haven’t already!
Below you will find your homework for the week. Everything is due on Friday so be sure to budget your time accordingly. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. Have a great week! J

Vocabulary: On the back of this page are words that come from our math and social studies units this week.   Study the definition and the part of speech. The test will be on Friday.
Word Work/Spelling: Each night you will need to study your spelling words for homework. The spelling test will be Friday. This week we will focus on adding the inflections –ed and –ing to base words. We will also work on plural patterns. Be sure you know how to spell  ALL forms of these words.  Here are your 10 base words:

1.       trip: trips, tripped, tripping
2.       chase: chases, chased, chasing
3.       need: needs, needed, needing
4.       dress: dresses, dressed, dressing
5.       dry: dries, dried, drying
6.       tan: taxes, taxed, taxing
7.       fan: fans, fanned, fanning
8.       race: races, raced, racing
9.       say: says, said, saying
10.    fly: flies, flew, flying            

Reading: You should read a book of your choice for at least 20 minutes each night. Short, leveled readers may be sent home for fluency and comprehension practice.  In class, we will focus on non-fiction and problem/solution as we read The Spirit of Endurance on p. 519 in the Treasure’s book.  Comprehension questions will be due Thursday and a test will be given on Friday.
Writing: In class, we will begin drafting our personal narratives.
Science: In class, we will continue our FOSS units of study in physical, earth, or life sciences. For homework, complete worksheet 51-52 to review natural resources. This worksheet is due Friday.

Social Studies: In class, we will begin Unit 5 in the History Alive textbook, which focuses on the European Explorers who claimed land in the New World for Europe. For homework, complete worksheet 76-77 to practice reading route maps. This worksheet is due Friday.  
Math: In Unit 4 this week, we will add and subtract fractions. Math homework each night will reinforce concepts from class.

5th Grade Homework Newsletter for November 12-23

Thank you to all who came to our Veteran’s Day celebration. It was a wonderful way to honor our heroes! We also want to say thank you to all who attended parent/teacher conferences last week. It was great meeting with you and discussing your child’s progress. Please continue to contact us with ongoing questions or concerns.
·         Keep bringing in those pennies, nickels, quarters, and dimes! The Penny Harvest is in full swing! Congratulations to Ms. Reese’s class for winning last week’s intermediate challenge. They will receive an “electronic day” reward Monday. A new challenge begins this week, so keep going!
·         Special Friends Day is next Tuesday. Look for more information about this fun day in the Thursday folder.
·         There will be no school next week Wednesday-Friday. Happy Thanksgiving!

Reading: In order to become a better reader, you must read every day! You should read a book of your choice for at least 20 minutes each night. Short, leveled readers may be sent home for fluency and comprehension practice.  In class, we will focus on non-fiction and summarizing. There will be no comprehension questions this week from the Treasure’s book.
Writing: In order to become a better writer, you must write every day! In class, we will begin pre-writing for a personal narrative. Students are encouraged to write about ONE specific, recent, and significant event in his/her life. For homework, please bring one or two “mementoes” that remind you of your personal narrative experience that you can share with the class on FRIDAY .
You will write a letter to the Chamber of Commerce or Visitor Bureau of your city explaining your assignment and requesting a brochure or any other free information about the history, landmarks, events and sights of the city.  Since this is for the research portion of your project, this must be done early so you get your information back in time for it to be included in your written report and/or speech. Letter Draft due: TUES. & Final due: THURS.
Science: In class, we will continue our FOSS units of study in physical, earth, or life sciences. For homework, complete worksheet 45-46 to review natural resources.
Social Studies: In class, we will begin Unit 4 in the History Alive textbook, which focuses on learning the history behind the exploration of the New World.  There will be no homework worksheet this week in social studies.
Math: In Unit 4 this week, we will work with equivalent fractions, improper fractions, and mixed numbers. Then we will learn how to add and subtract fractions.  Math homework each night will reinforce concepts from class.

Vocabulary Words for Nov. 1-4

Look up the definition and part of speech for the following words. The test will be Thursday this week.
  1. fact (n.)-something that is true and can be proven.
  2. opinion (n.)-somthing that you THINK is true. Cannot be proven.
  3. representative (n.)- a person who is chosen to represent or stand for another or others
  4. colonel (n.)- one of the ranks of a military officer
  5. attorney (n.)- a lawyer; one who helps in legal matters
  6. qualify (v.)- to make fit, as for a certain job or task
  7. postpone (v.) to put off to a latr time
  8. submit (v.) to give up OR to present
  9. legislature (n.)- a government body having the power to make laws
  10. satisfactory (adj.) good enough to meet a need or desire

Comprehension Questions:
Restate the question and answer in complete sentences on a separate sheet of paper. Use examples from the text to prove all answers.
1.       What real person in history is this story about? What year was this person born?
2.       Do you think the author really believes that Esther’s ideas are “crazy?” Why or why not?
3.       What kind of person is Benjamin Sheeks? Why did he want to keep the proposal from being voted on by the Wyoming Territory Council?
4.       Why do you think the justice of the peace in South Pass City resigned after the vote in the legislature? Explain.
5.       What do you think caused Ben Sheeks to feel that women should be able to vote and hold office the same as men after he moved away from South Pass City?
6.       What do you think the author meant when she wrote that Esther Morris had the courage to “show how the idea looked in the living of it”?
7.       What effect did Esther Morris have on the townspeople? What effect did she have on the rest of the country? Make text-world connections.
8.       Create a fact/opinion chart to list at least 5 facts from the text and 5 opinions.

5th Grade Homework Newsletter for November 1-5

Welcome back!! We hope everyone had a relaxing fall break, and is now refreshed for trimester 2. Here are some important events to remember this week:
·         Parent/Teacher Conferences are being held this week. If you have not scheduled a time to meet with your child’s teacher, please do so as soon as possible.
·         The annual Fun Run will be this Wednesday during IA time. Please dress appropriately to walk/run outside.
·         The Veteran’s Day Celebration will be held this Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in the gym. Please join us in honoring our veterans.
·         There is no school for students on Friday, November 5th due to conferences.
·         Please continue to bring Coats for Colorado and spare change for our Penny Harvest. Thank you!
A NOTE ABOUT HOMEWORK: Students should spend no more than 50 minutes of homework each night. If this is not the case, please contact us because students may need extra support in learning concepts or time management skills. Below you will find your homework for the week.
