5th Grade Homework Newsletter for November 1-5

Welcome back!! We hope everyone had a relaxing fall break, and is now refreshed for trimester 2. Here are some important events to remember this week:
·         Parent/Teacher Conferences are being held this week. If you have not scheduled a time to meet with your child’s teacher, please do so as soon as possible.
·         The annual Fun Run will be this Wednesday during IA time. Please dress appropriately to walk/run outside.
·         The Veteran’s Day Celebration will be held this Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in the gym. Please join us in honoring our veterans.
·         There is no school for students on Friday, November 5th due to conferences.
·         Please continue to bring Coats for Colorado and spare change for our Penny Harvest. Thank you!
A NOTE ABOUT HOMEWORK: Students should spend no more than 50 minutes of homework each night. If this is not the case, please contact us because students may need extra support in learning concepts or time management skills. Below you will find your homework for the week. Everything is due on Thursday so be sure to budget your time accordingly. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. Have a great week! J

Vocabulary: On the back of this page are words that come from the  story When Esther Morris Headed West.  Study the definition and the part of speech. The test will be on Thursday.
Word Work/Spelling: Each night you will need to study your spelling words for homework. The spelling test will be Thursday. This week we will focus on vowel patterns in one syllable words. Be sure you know how to spell these words correctly in your writing too. Here are your 20 words:

Reading: In order to become a better reader, you must read every day! You should read a book of your choice for at least 20 minutes each night. Short, leveled readers may be sent home for fluency and comprehension practice.  In class, we will read the story When Esther Morris Headed West and comprehension questions will be due Thursday.
Writing: In order to become a better writer, you must write every day! In class, we will begin pre-writing for a personal narrative. Students are encouraged to write about ONE specific, recent, and significant event in his/her life. Students are encouraged to bring a picture of this event to school this week to share with the class.
 
Science: In class, we will continue our FOSS units of study in physical, earth, or life sciences. There will be no homework review worksheet this week.
Social Studies: In class, we will work on a story about our imaginary island that incorporates our writing tools and knowledge of landforms and geography. There will be no homework worksheet this week
Math: We will begin Unit 4 this week, which focuses on fractions.  Math homework will be sent home each night to reinforce concepts from class and a test review will also be sent home.
