5th Grade Homework Newsletter for February 20-22 & 25-27

This week we will have school Wednesday-Friday.
Next week we will have school Monday-Wednesday.

·         Report cards will go home Friday. Please sign the envelope and return it on Monday.
·         Please make sure you have signed up for a Parent/Teacher conference next week. Students are highly encouraged to attend the conference.
·         Please make sure your child has enough pencils and crayons for him/her to use in class. Many students’ supplies have run out and need to be replenished.
·         Don’t forget to order your yearbook before Friday, March 8. Cost is $15.
·         If you are interested in volunteering to lead interviews, shop meetings, or help in a shop at Young Ameritowne on May 13, please mark your calendar now to attend a mandatory parent training session on Tuesday, April 23 at 6 p.m. in Ms. Reese’s room.  Reminders will be sent again closer to the actual training date.
·         Look out for an upcoming message or email from your teacher regarding snacks for TCAP. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
·         TCAP testing will take place Tuesday, March 12-Wednesday, March 20. Attendance is extremely important, so please make sure to be here on time and schedule all appointments accordingly.

1.      There will be no spelling or vocabulary this week or next.
2.      Homework due on Friday, February 22:  Science review packet (pages 110-114).
3.      Homework due on Wednesday, February 27: Reading poetry packet (all).
4.      Read each night for at least 20 minutes.
5.      Nightly math homework will be given and be due the next day to review in class.

Here’s What We’re Learning in Class:
Reading: Review summarizing, inferring, context clues, and short constructed responses.
Writing: We will write extended 5 paragraph persuasive essays that incorporate supporting arguments, counterpoints, and a conclusion with a call to action.
Science: Review of the scientific method, interpreting tables/graphs, experiment variables, and test taking strategies.
Social Studies: Complete and review Chapter 9 on Colonial America.
Math: We will continue unit 7, which focuses on measurement. The test will be on Tuesday, March 5. Skills include volume, capacity, customary v. metric measurements, weight, temperature, and time.

5th Grade Homework Newsletter for February 11-15

·         Lollipop sales are this Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday BEFORE school only. Presale orders from last week will be delivered this Tuesday.
·         Per school policy, we will NOT have classroom Valentine’s Day parties on Thursday.
·         There will be no school on Monday, February 18 or Tuesday, February 19.
·         Report cards will go home February 22.
·         Parent/Teacher conference week is February 25-March 1.

Vocabulary: On the back of this page are words that come from the Treasure’s non-fiction article “Rattlers!” Study the definition and the part of speech. The test will be on Friday.
Word Work/Spelling: Each night you will need to study your spelling words for homework. The spelling test will be Friday. This week we will focus on words that have long –u patterns in accented syllables and “oddball” patterns for this rule.

Short, leveled readers may be sent home for fluency and comprehension practice.  In class, we will focus on summarizing non-fiction, stating the main idea, and supporting details. We will also be reading persuasive texts to connect to our writing.
Writing: In class and at home, we will draft, revise, and edit persuasive letters to Mrs. Speidel.
Science: In class, we will continue the FOSS unit of study in physical, earth, or life sciences. For homework, complete the review packet which is due Friday.
Social Studies: In class, we will continue chapter 8 in the History Alive textbook, which discusses life in Colonial America.
Math: We will continue unit 7, which focuses on measurement. Nightly homework will be sent home to reinforce concepts learned in class.

Vocabulary

These words come from the article “Jiminy Crickets.”
Look the definition and part of speech up in the dictionary.

·         entomologist (noun)-a branch of zoology/science that deals with insects
·         mopane (noun)- a type of tree
·         calcium (noun)- a silver, white, soft, and metallic chemical element that occurs only in a combination
·         phosphorus (noun)- a nonmetallic element that has characteristics similar to nitrogen
·         riboflavin (noun)-a growth promoting vitamin that occurs in milk and liver
·         locust (noun)-a destructive migratory grasshopper
·         cicadas (noun)-insects related to the aphids that have wide heads and large transparent wings
·         trenches (noun)- a long narrow cut in the ground
·         emphasizes (verb)-stresses an important point
·         particularly (adjective)-of or relating to a specific or individual person, place, or thing.
